Kurt L. Maggio, M.D.
Dr. Maggio, our President and CEO, started Renewal Dermatology & MedSpa in summer 2012, having retired from a career in military medicine spanning three decades. He served as a faculty researcher and physician in the country's third largest dermatology residency training program for 15 of those years. He loves to teach and learn. Colonel Maggio is a combat veteran who has practiced dermatology all over the world but regards Virginia as his home, where he met his wife 35 years ago. They raised their five children in the Commonwealth and have 10 grandchildren. He enjoys running, hiking, swimming and gardening.
Dr. Maggio specializes in the surgical treatment of skin cancer, and is double board certified in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. As a procedural dermatologist he also has advanced training in laser and cosmetic dermatology. He looks forward to applying his skills to address your skin problems and concerns with the dignity and respect you deserve.
Rolla Jaber, M.D.
Dr. Jaber is Dr. Maggio's business partner and Chief Medical Officer. She is a board certified dermatologist and has been practicing in the Northern Virginia area since 2008. She did her undergraduate education at the College of William and Mary where she achieved the highest honors of membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, and then started medical school at The University of Virginia, earning membership into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her dermatology training in Michigan, where she served as Chief Resident in her senior year of residency, after which she returned to practice medicine in Virginia.
Dr. Jaber specializes in a broad range of medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologic services. Her areas of interests include skin cancer screening and treatment, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and rejuvenation of aging skin. She strives to provide comprehensive and up to date medical care with the utmost respect and compassion towards her patients.
She met and married her husband of 20 years while in medical school. They lead an active and busy life raising and spending time with their three young children. She also enjoys kickboxing, soccer, reading, and traveling.
Reena Vaid, M.D.
Dr. Vaid is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She is a native Texan and was raised in Houston, Texas. She attended Emory University receiving a Bachelor in Arts in Asian Studies and Sanskrit. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree and completed her pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas. Dr. Vaid went on to the University of Texas Health Science Center and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for her dermatology residency, working extensively with skin cancer patients and serving as Chief Resident during her final year. She also completed clinical research in pediatric dermatology and worked in the pediatric urgent care at Northwestern University/Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She has published in several journals and textbooks in dermatology.
In her personal life, she has performed Indian classical dance throughout India and the United States and enjoys spending time with her family playing soccer, hiking, and running.
Leilei Huffman, M.D.
Dr. Huffman is a board certified dermatologist and Northern Virginia native. She received her medical degree (M.D.) from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed her dermatology training at Wayne State University in Michigan. She also holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia.
Dr. Huffman is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Washington D.C. Dermatological Society.
Dr. Huffman enjoys practicing all aspects of dermatology, with an emphasis on providing compassionate patient care. She has been awarded numerous patient care and advocacy awards throughout her career. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She loves to read, travel and watch UVA basketball.
Kathryn Sowerwine, M.D.
Dr. Sowerwine is a board certified Allergist and Immunologist with a special interest in dermatological diseases. Dr. Sowerwine has 5 years of experience in the dermatology field as she has been managing complicated dermatitis cases, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis, performing skin checks, rosacea, acne, hair loss, cosmetics and much more. She completed her clinical and research fellowship in allergy and immunology at the prestigious National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She is a published author and has presented at national conferences.
Prior to her work at the NIH, Dr. Sowerwine completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital and went on to become a member of the medical staff. Dr. Sowerwine continues to stay current in her area of expertise by attending both national dermatology conferences as well as allergy conferences annually. Her extracurricular interests include spending time with her two children, scuba diving, and yoga.
Soonyou Kwon, M.D.
Dr. Kwon is double board certified in dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. Dr. Kwon was a Dean's Merit Scholar at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was awarded an NIH clinical research grant to study the role of immune therapy in skin cancer during medical school. She completed her residency at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD and then completed her fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery at the University of Cincinnati. She is an expert in surgical techniques for removing skin cancer on the face, head, neck and hands.
She enjoys drinking chamomile tea, listening to parenting podcasts and hiking with her husband and 2 kids.
Ariel Gelman M.D.
Ari Gelman M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in general dermatology. He earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy and his MD from Temple University. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center and his dermatology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. After residency, he served as the Army's only dermatologist in Asia while at Brian Allgood Army Medical Center and then serving as the chief of dermatology at Tripler Army Medical Center. Dr. Gelman is currently a staff dermatologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and professor of dermatology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. Dr. Gelman's dermatologic interests include: complex and inpatient medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and procedural dermatology. In his free time, he enjoys soccer, hiking, camping, and travel.
Zara Meadows, PA-C
Zara is a certified Physician Assistant through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) who grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. She graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science degree from the University of South Florida before working as a medical assistant in a dermatology practice in the Tampa Bay area for nearly 2 years. She then went on to obtain her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from USF's Morsani College of Medicine. Additionally, she is an active member of the American Academy of PA's (AAPA) and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA). She specializes in comprehensive dermatological care for patients of all ages, prioritizing early skin cancer detection and counseling patients on healthy skin care habits.
Lori Doyle, PA-C
Lori is a board certified Physician Assistant who is a Virginia native, growing up in nearby Alexandria. She graduated from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina with a B.S. in Biology, and then returned home to pursue a career in medicine. For over two years she worked as a medical assistant in a Washington D.C. Dermatology practice, where she gained invaluable experience and discovered her true passion for dermatology. She then went on to receive her Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.
As a part of the Renewal Dermatology team for over 10 years, Lori's areas of interest include both general and cosmetic dermatology, treating patients of all ages. She is licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine and Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants. She is an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), as well as the society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) and the Virginia Association of Physician Assistants (VAPA).
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her four young children and husband, getting outdoors, and cheering on the local DC sports teams.
Nichole Thomas, PA-C
Nichole Thomas is a board certified Physician Assistant accredited by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Origianlly from Haymarket, Virginia, she graduated summa cum laude from Bridgewater College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Shenanadoah University, where she received specialized training in dermatology.
An active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA), Nicole stays up to date in the latest advancements in dermatology by regularly attending conferences hosted by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). She enjoys providing personalized care to patients of all ages and has extensive experience managing both acute and chronic skin conditions. She has a special interest in skin cancer prevention and screening, acne treatment, and cosmetic dermatology.
Outside of work, Nicole enjoys traveling all over the world from Peru to Japan, hiking the trails of Shenandoah National Park, and cherishing time with her husband and family.
Sarah Brady, FNP-BC
Sarah is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She graduated from Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Minor in Spanish Language and Culture. Sarah's fluency in Spanish has been very helpful in her career in medicine. After graduating she spent 8 years working in the hospital setting on cardiac units. She moved to Northern Virginia in 2008. Sarah graduated with Sigma Theta Tau Honors from George Mason University with a Master of Science in Nursing. She then worked in the outpatient gastroenterology setting as a nurse practitioner. Her interest in dermatology has been strongly influenced by her father-in-law, Dr. Brady. She enjoys many aspects of dermatology and her interests are medical dermatology, lasers and chemical peels.
Sarah loves spending time with her family. She thoroughly enjoys cheering for her sons various sport teams.She enjoys exercising, hiking and traveling.
Kara Chapman, PA-C
Kara Chapman, PA-C, MPAS, is a Physician Assistant certified by the NCCPA and a Diplomate
Fellow of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA). She is originally from
Pittsburgh, PA, where she completed her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Chatham
University in 2007. After graduation, Kara worked in Emergency Medicine in Northern Virginia
and Michigan for several years before her husband's career took them overseas. Kara discovered her passion for Dermatology while working with the staff dermatologist at US Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan. Kara enjoys all aspects of dermatology and has special interest in skin cancer screenings; treating acute and chronic conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis; and performing procedures. She also enjoys being able to connect with her patients and walking with them on their journey to better skin health.
Kara enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, three daughters, and their GreatPyrenees dog, Kuma. She is thrilled to be a part of the Renewal Dermatology team!
Mark Gibbs, FNP - BC
Mark is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with a special interest in dermatologic diseases. He joined Renewal Dermatology in 2012 as a medical assistant and has continued to be with the practice ever since. He graduated with a BSN from Shenandoah University in 2015. He then worked in the ICU at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital for 4 years while also working with us as a Mohs nurse. In 2020, Mark completed a Family Nurse Practitioner Masters Degree from George Mason University. Mark specializes in Botox and fillers, skin cancer screenings, skin cancer surgery, and the management of various skin diseases.
Mark enjoys spending time off with his sons, wife and dog. During his downtime, you will often find him boating or enjoying a day on the golf course.
Toni Davison, PA-C
Toni is a board certified Physician Assistant and has been practicing medicine since graduating from Seton Hill University in 2017. She has a background in Emergency medicine and joined Renewal Dermatology in 2024. She specializes in medical dermatology and skin cancer screenings. Toni is thankful for the opportunity to help patients, and looks forward to helping you achieve your healthy skin goals!
She and her husband have 2 young boys, and love spending time togethe enjoying the great outdoors.
