Acne, which is commonly caused by hormonal changes, may consist of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts/nodules and pustules. Breakouts might occur on the face, chest, back/shoulders, buttocks, and sometimes on the upper arms. It tends to affect teenagers the most; however adults can have breakouts and develop acne later on in life. Acne is not life threatening but it may cause scarring.

Treatments for Acne

The goal of treatment is to keep new lesions from forming and assist in the healing of older lesions. Treatments may need to be oral or topical depending on the severity of the acne (in some cases orals are used with topicals). Treatment options may include retinoid cream/gel, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or topical and oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for acne, and not every patient will respond the same to different types of treatments.

To assist in the treatments for acne there are also chemical peels, laser treatments, removal and drainage of cysts, or intralesional cortisone injections. You may also see our aesthetician at the Medspa for acne facials, blu light therapy and light chemical peels.
